For years, brides were told that a hairstyle holds best on hair washed the day before. That is still the usual rule, but there are two cases where it is better washed that same morning.

Why it is usually washed the night before

In most cases I will ask you to wash your hair the night before the wedding. In the morning it arrives clean, dry and unhurried, and you do not spend on drying it time that is precious that morning.

When it is better washed that morning

The first exception is very fine, very oily hair. A few hours are enough for its roots to lose volume and look flat, so I wash it, or ask you to wash it, that same morning, so it reaches the hairstyle as fresh as possible.

The second is a blow-dry finish, the loose hair with movement that is made with a brush and a dryer. That style starts with the drying itself, so it is done on hair washed that morning.

Why freshly washed hair is no longer a problem

The idea that clean hair will not hold a style comes from a time when there was no other way to give it grip. Texturising products now give it exactly the grip it needs, without weighing it down or making it look dirty, so I can work on freshly washed hair whenever that suits it best.

The weeks before the wedding, with the cut, the colour and the conditioning, have a calendar of their own, set out in how to care for your hair before the wedding.
