Brides with fine or thin hair often ask me whether they will need extensions to have volume on their wedding day. They are not always needed. There are several ways to add body with your own hair, and when I do wedding hair, extensions are the last resort, for when the style you want truly calls for them. Knowing how each option works helps you arrive at the trial with a clear idea.

Why an updo can turn out small with fine hair

An updo is built from the hair there is. When each strand is fine, the whole has less body, and the updo can turn out smaller than you imagined. Which styles work best with this type of hair is covered in what to do if your hair is very fine or has little volume.

Do brides wear hair extensions?

Not always. With fine hair, volume is built from your own hair first, and extensions only come in when the style you want truly needs them. When they do, clip-ins in human hair are the ones to choose.

How volume is added without extensions

Extensions are an expensive resource, so I always try to build volume with your own hair first. In an updo, that can mean sponge fillers, which give shape from inside, or volume techniques: dry products that let backcombing build structure. Only when that does not reach the result you want, or when the style absolutely needs them, do extensions come in.

When extensions are needed, the best choice is the kind you can put in and take out: clip-ins. I do not recommend permanent extensions for the wedding, because if they are not well placed they can get in the way of the style: their position is already fixed and does not always match the one the updo needs. Clip-ins go exactly where they are needed, so they fit the style you are after.

Are clip-in or permanent extensions better for a wedding?

Clip-ins. They go exactly where the style needs them and come out at the end of the day. Permanent extensions, if they are not well placed, can get in the way of the updo.

If you already wear permanent extensions, should you get hair extensions for your wedding explains how they are checked before the wedding.

Whether clip-in extensions damage your hair

A clip-in extension does not damage your hair. Nothing is anchored with heat or with pressure. There is only the slight pressure of the clip, the same kind of clip anyone uses to hold their hair back at the gym. That is why they are not meant for everyday wear, but for one particular day when you want special volume they are perfect.

Do clip-in extensions damage your hair?

No. They are held by a clip, with no heat and no bonding, just like an everyday hair clip. For a one-off day like your wedding they are perfect.

Why extensions have to be real human hair

Extensions always have to be human hair, because only then do they behave like your own. Synthetic hair does not take heat: it cannot be shaped with curling tongs or any other heated tool, and the style loses the shape it was meant to have. Over the hours it tends to tangle, on a day full of hugs, dancing and movement. And in the light it has a different shine from yours, which in photographs ends up showing where one hair stops and the other begins. That is why I never recommend it for a wedding.

Whether clip-in extensions show in a wedding updo

Clip-in extensions in human hair are placed inside the style, where they cannot be seen, and blend in with your own hair.

Can you see extensions in a wedding updo?

If they are clip-ins in human hair, they need not show. They are placed inside the updo and blend in with your hair.

When fine hair needs extensions for a half-up style

With a half-up style it depends on the look you want. If you are happy for it to be smaller and more understated with your own hair, it goes ahead without extensions. But if your reference photo shows a lot of volume and you expect your hair to look like that, extensions are needed.

Who sources the extensions and when they need to be ready

You can bring them yourself or, if you prefer, I can source them for you. If it is already clear before the trial that the style will need them, it is best to have them on the day of the trial, so they can be tried with the style. Sometimes the need only shows up at the trial itself, when the proposal you like most turns out to call for them. They are then found afterwards.

If you have fine hair and volume worries you, come to the trial with your hair just as it is and with your reference photos. That is where it becomes clear what your hair can give on its own and whether your style needs something more.
