Marrying by the sea is beautiful, and for the hair it is also the most demanding setting of all. So a hairstyle for a beach wedding is thought through differently from the very start.
How salt water, wind and humidity affect the hair
On a beach, the hair takes salt water, humidity, heat, sweat and wind all at once. The sea air carries tiny drops of salt water that fall on the hair constantly, even if nobody notices them, and humidity softens it: waves lose their shape and an updo loosens. The wind, meanwhile, pulls the style in the same direction throughout the ceremony.
How beach wedding hair is prepared
So the hair is prepared just like the skin, with those conditions in mind from the base up. I work with dry, texturising products that give grip without weight, and I anchor the style at the points the wind will pull, including where the veil is fixed. What holds it is not the amount of hairspray but how the weight is distributed and where the pins are placed.
Why no hairstyle stays completely still on a windy day
Even so, no hairstyle stays completely still on a beach, and it is better to count on that from the start. Well-prepared hair lasts much longer, but it is not foolproof, any more than waterproof makeup is. With wind and humidity, the hair will move with a certain freedom, and that does not mean the style has failed.
How a good updo evolves over the day
What a well-made hairstyle does achieve is to stay beautiful all day, even as it changes. In the morning it leaves with the shape decided at the trial; by mid-afternoon it is a little looser, with a strand or two moved by the wind; by night it keeps that shape, softer, because it has evolved naturally with the wedding.
